Design for “Nothing Stirred in the Air” by Stephen Dillon, published in Places journal, about the notorious women’s high-security unit at Lexington Federal Prison that used sensory deprivation as a form of disciplinary violence. I tried to invoke the bare, white, fluorescent-lit environment of the unit with the layout and illustrations. I also drew imagery from other buildings with disciplinary designs, such as the slot windows and roof exercise yard of Chicago’s Metropolitan Correctional Center.
